VANCOUVER – Tuesday was a rough day inside Corus Radio’s Vancouver cluster.
Twelve people were let go in a round of cost-cutting at stations CKNW, Mojo Radio, The Fox, and Rock 101 affecting all areas, sales, marketing, reporting and production.
Simply put, the cluster has to perform better, general manager JJ Johnston told www.cartt.ca on Wednesday. Johnston moved from Toronto to Vancouver in January to take over for now-retired GM Lou Del Gobbo and has spent his time "looking for efficiencies," said Johnston.
"This is just about the efficiency of the cluster," he added.
Other shuffles have taken place as well. Assistant program director Ian Koenigsfest has had the news director title added to his business card and senior news editor Gord MacDonald will have more talk duties now. Tom Plasteras, who had roles with Mojo, CKNW "and other departments," said Johnston, will now concentrate mainly on NW.
In a note to friends, now former director of marketing and promotions, Phil Evans, said, "After a hell of a good run (20 years!) in a job people said would last a year or two at best, I finally failed to duck in time and got reorganized… The up side? I got treated fairly and decently (and) I will have the best friggin’ lawn you’ve ever seen."
