Corus creates digital sign division

CALGARY – Digital signs, such as big food court screens in malls or smaller ones at the gas pumps, are popping up everywhere.

So this week, Corus Custom Networks, a division of Corus Entertainment, announced the launch of its new digital signage division.

“With strong TV listings and broadcast news brands and nearly 20 years of experience in non-traditional media, Corus Custom Networks is well positioned to expand into the rapidly growing digital signage arena,” said Tyler Alton, vice-president and general manager of Corus Custom Networks, in a press release. “Our unique ability to provide end-to-end service in sales and traffic and to draw on a significant library of content from Corus’ specialty services and animation studio, give us the competencies and expertise required to meet our clients needs.”

While still a relatively new medium in the Canadian market, digital signage, which partly originated in elevators as a single screen relaying news, weather and sports, has evolved to multiple TV screens featuring customized information and advertising that can be found in retail spaces, banks, airports, restaurants, grocery stores, public transportation and even washroom stalls.

With a team of award-winning producers and 10 broadcast designers, Corus Custom Networks will create all original content in-house. The company will also develop digital signage campaigns for retail clients by leveraging TV content from Corus’ specialty channels W Network and CMT.

The company recently appointed Paul Bzeta to oversee the digital signage division as manager of production and digital signage. Bzeta previously co-founded Jet Stream Digital Media, one of Canada’s first streaming media and web cast companies and Zoom Communications Inc., a Calgary-based video production company.

Through the TV listings and broadcast news channels, Corus Custom Networks reaches millions of Shaw Cable viewers in close to 100 markets from Victoria to Halifax.
