Construction begins on broadband infrastructure in Waterloo Region

WATERLOO REGION – The Ontario government announced today construction has begun in Waterloo Region on three projects involving $11.1 million in broadband infrastructure.

The projects will connect over 1,200 homes and businesses in the communities of Maryhill, Haysville, Ayr, Orr’s Lake, Clyde, Dorking, Macton, North Woolwich, Josephburg and Erbsville to high-speed Internet.

Funding was awarded by Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) Inc. SWIFT is supported by the governments of Canada and Ontario, which each committed $3.7 million in funding for the three Waterloo Region projects, according to a press release.

Internet service providers awarded contracts for these three projects include North Frontenac Telephone Company, Bell Canada and Rogers Communications.

“This milestone in SWIFT’s regional broadband expansion plan is another step in the right direction to achieving the level of connectivity in Southwestern Ontario that is required in today’s highly connected world,” said Gary McNamara, SWIFT board chair, in the press release.

“Once completed, the new networks will deliver long-term sustainable broadband solutions that will unlock greater economic growth potential for businesses and provide local communities and the residents that live within them greater access to social and global opportunities.”
