TORONTO – Comwave has launched a new version today of its ePhone app for iOS devices which includes a built-in telephone number that users can choose to allow them to receive incoming calls from any telephone around the world.
The free app uses VoIP technology that can be used anywhere around the world to receive free calls even if the other party doesn’t have an ePhone. The user can choose their own phone number and receive phone calls for free to that number regardless of where they might be. The app works with the user’s 3G, 4G or Wifi connection. “Having a Toronto or New York phone number on your smartphone is a powerful tool, especially when you travel and want to get around those costly roaming fees,” said Comwave president Yuval Barzakay in a release.
The company says its apps are meant to compete with Skype’s VoIP technology. Free calling to the USA and Canada is already available with the ePhone app. International minutes can be added to a user’s account in $5, $10 or $30 increments to make international calls with rates that Comwave guarantees are lower than Skype. The ePhone app is available for iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad), Android, Mac, PC and Blackberry Playbook devices.
