Complex Canada gets in the spirit with digital series Hidden Gems


TORONTO — Digital media platform Complex Canada, operated by Corus Entertainment, announced today it has partnered with Appleton Estate Jamaican Rum to launch a new digital series, Hidden Gems, celebrating Jamaican excellence in Canada.

Over four episodes, the series spotlights “some of Canada’s most established trailblazers and budding new creatives in music, style, and visual arts, introducing audiences to some of the country’s most innovative Jamaican-Canadian creators,” reads a press release.

The series features Appleton Estate Jamaican Rum master blender Joy Spence (pictured), known as the spirits industry’s first female master blender, who is joined by four esteemed Jamaican-Canadian creatives, including filmmaker Charles Officer, trailblazing lifestyle blogger Catriona Smart, award-winning stylist Caffrey Van Horne, and musician, cinematographer and restauranteur Richard Hilary.

Hidden Gems is produced by so.da, Corus’s social digital agency, and Mindshare Canada in collaboration with Fela, a production company founded by Taj Critchlow and Director X.

All episodes of the series will be available online at complex.ca and across Complex Canada’s social platforms. Complex Canada is part of U.S.-based Complex Networks.

As part of the partnership with Complex Canada, Hidden Gems will also premiere on linear TV in a new Complex-branded programming block on Global, Food Network Canada and National Geographic running from September 2-5.

The series will also be promoted across Complex Canada’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter platforms with episodic teasers, still images and a series of custom reels driving to the series.
