Will launch consumer survey

OTTAWA – The Competition Bureau will provide an update today on its Canadian broadband market study.

It will also launch a consumer survey to learn some of the habits of Canadians when it comes to purchasing internet services. The Bureau wants to know if changes to regulations could result in a broader range of internet service options or a reduction in barriers to switching providers.

The study, launched by the Bureau in May, is meant to focus on the state of competition in Canada’s broadband sector and “identify positive steps that regulators or policymakers could take to further support competition among broadband providers,” said the Bureau then.

An update summarizing how the broadband market study has progressed since it began and how the Bureau will proceed in the coming months will be released at 11 a.m.

The study is meant to analyze four themes: the ability of broadband providers to deploy competitive service offers; consumer reactions to new competitive alternatives; the impact of existing regulation on broadband providers; and whether there are lessons to be learned from how other countries manage and regulate broadband competition.
