Commission’s television policy and applications group shuffle roles

OTTAWA-GATINEAU – With a number of important, high profile files in front of the Commission, and one long-time CRTC staffer headed towards retirement, Scott Hutton, associate executive director of broadcasting announced some people moves on Friday.

Nick Ketchum, the Commission’s senior director of television policy and applications, is considering retirement but has agreed to stay on through the end of the year to lead the Diversity of Voices proceeding as well as to help address ongoing Canadian Television Fund (CTF) issues. He will continue to report to Hutton as senior director, broadcasting policy.

However, “for both succession planning purposes and to allow Nick to concentrate on these two files that are of great importance to Canadian broadcasting policy, I have created an acting opportunity to manage day to day activities of the Television Policy and Applications group,” Hutton told staff in a memo.

Martine Vallée, who is currently director, English pay, specialty and social policy will take on this acting responsibility for an initial four-month period, beginning Monday, July 9th, 2007. Following this initial period, conventional television manager Peter Foster will assume the duties for a subsequent four-month period.

Hutton also announced that Annie Laflamme will be confirmed as the CRTC’s director, French television policy and applications. She has been in the role on an acting basis since August 2006.

As for the biggest vacant job at the Commission – vice-chair telecom – the position remains unfilled for now as the seat’s former holder, Richard French, left that role last month as he announced earlier this year.
