WINNIPEG — Among new educational programming and new seasons of returning favourites, Indigenous broadcaster APTN’s fall lineup includes a documentary following the family of the late Colten Boushie (pictured), a young Cree man fatally shot in a Saskatchewan farmyard, as they seek justice from Canada’s legal system.
Premiering September 13 on APTN, the Boushie documentary, nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, is directed by Tasha Hubbard and weaves a narrative encompassing the filmmaker’s own adoption, the stark history of colonialism on the Prairies and a vision of a future where Indigenous children can live safely on their homelands, says the APTN news release. In October, APTN’s Face to Face interview show will present a special episode with writer-director-producer Hubbard.
On September 10, season one of Chuck and the First Peoples’ Kitchen will premiere (French premiere scheduled for September 14). Eager to learn more about First Peoples’ culinary traditions, chef Chuck Hughes visits Indigenous communities across Canada, discovering new hunting and cooking methods along the way.
APTN’s Indigenous-language original programming this fall includes Spirit Talker (premiering in Mi’kmaq on September 15), which follows Mi’kmaq medium Shawn Leonard as he travels from coast to coast using his psychic abilities to connect the living with the dead and bring hope, healing and closure to Indigenous communities, says the release.
“APTN’s upcoming fall schedule will feature a multitude of educational programming, with a distinctly Indigenous perspective,” said Danielle Audette, acting executive director of programming at APTN, in the news release. “We are excited to debut a variety of educational content that families can grow with.”
Shows returning to APTN this fall include: Nations at War (season two, premieres in Coast Salish on September 18, and in English on September 19); Wentworth (season eight, premieres September 24); and The Other Side (season six, premieres October 28).
Riverdale, Mystery Road, Petroglyphs to Pixels, a unique winter edition of APTN Indigenous Day Live and special programming in celebration of the 20th anniversary of APTN National News will also join the APTN lineup this fall.
Viewers can also expect new series to roll out throughout the season on the network’s APTN lumi streaming service.
