WATERFORD, CT – Cogeco Communications subsidiary Atlantic Broadband has launched Gigabit internet service in Connecticut, but there’s no indication that its Canadian parent will follow suit any time soon.
Atlantic Broadband's GigaEdge's residential and Pro GigaEdge's business internet services are now available to over 37,000 homes and businesses in eastern Connecticut communities including East Lyme, New London, Niantic, Montville, Oakdale, Quaker Hill, Uncasville and Waterford, according to that company’s news release. Pricing starts at $89.99/month for new residential customers and $249.99/month for new business customers.
But with 120 Mbps currently available to 90% of Cogeco’s footprint in Canada and its top product boasting speeds of 250 Mbps, Cogeco CEO Louis Audet said recently that there is no current need to push speeds that high here.
Speaking last week at the 2016 BMO Media and Telecom conference in Toronto, Audet noted that DOCSIS 3.0 and the coming 3.1 will allow cable operators to offer 1 Gbps on their plants without further fibre penetration, but that Cogeco will wait for market demand, first. “We will do it when we feel the market wants it,” he said.
