TORONTO – Cogeco Data Services announced Thursday that Timmins, Ont.-based gold mining company Lake Shore Gold has signed on as a client and will move part of its IT infrastructure to a private cloud managed by Cogeco Data Services.
With five data centres in Canada, the company’s utility-based IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) model cloud infrastructure services are hosted at its tier 3 quality data centres which are connected by Cogeco Data Services extensive network.
“Although our traditional IT setup was still doing its job, our proactive move to a dedicated Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution made a lot of business sense,” said Raymond Yip, Lake Shore Gold’s director of information systems, in a release. “Cogeco Data Services appealed to us because of their commitment to helping us transition to IaaS.”
The rise of secure cloud solutions gives businesses the opportunity to capitalize on the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of IaaS. “IaaS is a strong, viable option for Canadian companies of all sizes and is part of a strong overall trend toward greater cloud adoption,” said Mark Schrutt, Director, Services and Enterprise Applications, IDC Canada.
“At present, both the public and the private IaaS option in Canada are growing at a compound annual growth rate of 46%, with business agility being a key driver,” said Schrutt, who co-authored an IDC Canadian case study about IaaS with focusing on Lake Shore Gold and the Toronto Star.
