Cogeco appoints new CTO with experience in wireless networks

MONTREAL – Cogeco announced Thursday the appointment of Tim Dinesen to senior vice president and chief technology officer, effective September 11.

“Tim’s impressive track record, extensive experience in telecommunications, and passion for technology make him the ideal candidate for this highly strategic position at Cogeco as our business transforms and digital becomes increasingly embedded in our operations,” said Cogeco president and CEO Philippe Jette in a press release.

“In this role, he will evolve Cogeco’s technology and innovation strategy, as well as lead the deployment of emerging technologies,” Jette added. “I am very pleased that he is joining us and contributing to Cogeco’s leadership in the telecommunications and media sector.”

Dinesen was chief technology officer at Xplornet from 2014 to 2021 and held a number of management roles at Bell, where he worked from 2000 to 2011.

According to his LinkedIn page, Dinesen lists as specific areas of expertise LTE and 5G wireless networks, broadband satellite networks, fibre and wireless to the home networks, telecom regulatory affairs and cybersecurity and customer privacy.

Cogeco is gearing up to launch a wireless business using the virtual network operator business model. Jette said in July that the company has been negotiating rates to access the national wireless networks to kick-start that new era for the company.

Dinesen also lists that he’s a chief technology officer at the North American Tower Corporation, which describes itself as a leader in wireless infrastructure solutions for carriers.

As such, Dinesen is also listed as having experience on those matters in the United States, where he was a research fellow at the University of Virginia. He has a PhD in chemical physics from McGill University and an MBA from Queen’s University.
