CMPA promotes Sean Porter to SVP and general counsel

The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) announced Tuesday the appointment of Sean Porter to the position of senior vice president of national industrial relations and general counsel.

In his expanded role, Porter will advise on employment, privacy and policy matters at the CMPA as a member of its senior leadership team. He will also continue to lead the CMPA’s industrial relations strategy, overseeing negotiations, key relationships and the organization’s national industrial relations team while ensuring effective management of legal and reputational risk, the CMPA said in a press release announcing Porter’s promotion.

Porter joined the CMPA in 2018 as director of national industrial relations and counsel. In 2021, he was promoted to the position of lead negotiator and senior director, and in 2022 he was appointed as the CMPA’s vice president of national industrial relations and counsel.

“Over the past eight years, Sean has earned the respect and trust of producers and industry partners alike through his collaborative approach and practical, solutions-oriented mindset,” Reynolds Mastin, president and CEO of the CMPA, said in the organization’s press release. “With his depth of expertise, consistent sound legal advice and strategic leadership, I am confident that Sean will continue to play a key role in enabling the CMPA to navigate complex legal and policy matters and support a thriving Canadian production sector.”

“It has been a privilege working closely with our members and industry partners to champion the interests of Canada’s independent production sector,” Porter said in a statement. “I look forward to stepping into this expanded role, working alongside the CMPA board and senior leadership team to ensure the CMPA and our membership continue to thrive as we navigate a rapidly evolving legal and policy landscape.”

Prior to joining the CMPA in 2018, Porter was an associate in the labour and employment group at McCarthy Tétrault LLP. Before that, he articled and worked as an associate at Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP, a labour and employment law firm. He holds a Juris Doctor from Queen’s University and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2014.
