CMPA launches new skills development program for members

OTTAWA — The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) today launched its new CMPA STAR Producer Program, a comprehensive professional development platform designed to help the association’s members advance their careers and grow their businesses.

As shown in the new program’s logo (above), STAR is an acronym for “skills, training, access, resources”, which the program will offer through a range of development opportunities for producers at all stages of their careers, says CMPA.

The STAR Producer Program is made up of six modules which reflect the lifecycle of a production project: pre-development, development, pre-production, production, post-production and IP commercialization. Each module will run for approximately two months and will feature programming, training opportunities and supporting materials through the following pillars: presentations, networking, mentorship and resources.

CMPA members will have the opportunity to sign up for programming and events on an individual, case-by-case basis, throughout the year.

The first module (pre-development) will kick off this year’s STAR Producer Program with a presentation by Conquering Lion Pictures’ Damon D’Oliveira who will talk about his experience optioning books for the screen. The “in conversation” webinar is scheduled for December 16 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. ET. CMPA members can click here to register.

CMPA also issued a call today for established producers with experience acquiring and adapting IP to volunteer as mentors to support the STAR Producer Program’s mentorship pillar. Mentors would need to provide a 30- to 60-minute time commitment for short phone calls or Zoom meetings with early-career producers looking for advice and guidance related to identifying and acquiring IP, says CMPA.
