The Canada Media Fund (CMF) last week announced the 41 initiatives supported through its Sector Development Support program for the spring and fall 2024-2025 funding rounds, representing nearly $2.5 million in investments.
The program offers project-based funding to initiatives that demonstrate the potential to positively impact Canada’s audiovisual ecosystem by addressing industry gaps in distinct and identified areas, including Canada’s regions and indigenous and equity-seeking communities, the CMF says.
The spring round of program funding saw 11 out of 24 applications approved, with nearly $518,000 allocated to the selected initiatives, according to a CMF press release. Of those, 82 per cent were designed for equity-deserving communities, the CMF says. Eighty-two per cent will be led in English and 18 per cent in French.
The fall round saw both the highest number of projects submitted (57) and selected (30) for funding in a single Sector Development Support round, according to the CMF. Nearly $2 million was allocated to the selected initiatives, also a record for a single round of funding through the program, the CMF says. All of these projects are designed for equity-deserving groups, with 73 per cent targeting anglophones and 27 per cent targeting francophones.
Of the 41 total selected projects, 13 will be led in Quebec, 12 in Ontario, 10 in British Columbia, two in Nova Scotia, one in Alberta, one in Saskatchewan, one in Manitoba and one in the Yukon.
