TORONTO – The Canada Media Fund (CMF) released Wednesday its annual report, which shows the not-for-profit funding body’s investments in Canada’s screen-based industries activated $1.7 billion in industry activity during the 2022-2023 fiscal year.
In addition, CMF funding this past fiscal year continued to help advance opportunities for creators and stories from Indigenous and equity-seeking communities, according to a press release announcing the annual report’s publication and findings.
The CMF says its programs provided a total of $360.3 million in funding for the prototyping, development, production, promotion and export of 1,334 television and interactive digital media projects in 2022-2023. “Every CMF dollar invested generated $4.85 in production activity from coast to coast to coast,” the release reads.
More than $63 million was invested by the CMF in projects led by creators from Indigenous and equity-seeking communities, which is $3.7 million more than the year before, according to the release.
Furthermore, the CMF allocated $3.4 million in sector development support funding to 35 projects to bolster the growth of Canada’s audiovisual industry, particularly in underrepresented communities.
Additionally, almost $48 million in funding was distributed by the CMF to digital media projects.
“Our annual report demonstrates our unwavering commitment to advancing Canada’s screen-based industry and to supporting diverse and innovative projects that reflect our culture and identities,” said Valerie Creighton, CMF president and CEO, in the press release.
“With ‘Future Focused’ as its overall theme, our annual report showcases how the CMF adapted to challenges and seized opportunities during a year of disruption and uncertainty, while upholding our goals of excellence and inclusion. We are excited to continue working with our stakeholders and collaborators to shape the future of Canadian storytelling,” Creighton said.
The CMF develops, finances and promotes the production of Canadian content and applications for all audiovisual media platforms through financial contributions from the Government of Canada and the country’s cable, satellite and IPTV distributors.
