CMF funding triggered $1.5B in production activity, annual report shows

TORONTO – The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced today it released its 2020-2021 annual report, which shows its funding triggered $1.5 billion in production activity.

“Every $1 of CMF funding generated $4.29 in production activity, slightly higher than last year’s $4.12, despite historic challenges as a result of the global pandemic,” a press release says.

The CMF fosters, develops, finances and promotes Canadian content production. The Government of Canada and the country’s cable, satellite and IPTV distributors make financial contributions to the CMF.

In 2020-2021, the CMF funded 1,309 projects, according to its annual report. It’s program budget for the year was $356.8 million. Of the funding distributed, $45.2 million went to digital media projects.

Top-performing English-language programming funded by the CMF for 2020-2021 includes CTV’s Transplant, CBC’s Canada’s New Year’s Eve: Countdown to 2020 and Global’s Nurses. Top-performing French-language programs include La Voix, Fugueuse and Bye Bye 2019.

In 2020-2021, the CMF also administered $100.4 million in federal Covid-19 Emergency Relief Funds to over 1,200 organizations and companies, which meant “businesses in the audiovisual industry were able to maintain operations, ensuring a quick return to production,” says the press release.
