Claydon to head doc unit

TORONTO – Michael Claydon has been named area executive producer of independent documentaries for CBC Television.

Claydon will be responsible for overseeing and co-ordinating all independent documentary production for English television. He succeeds Jerry McIntosh as the overall person in charge of relations with Canada’s independent documentary community. Claydon will commission all independent documentaries and documentary series for CBC Television. He will also work closely with CBC Newsworld, which will continue to commission independent documentaries for its own strands, under executive producer Catherine Olsen.

“Michael has great depth of practical experience and knowledge of the independent sector from coast to coast,” said Mark Starowicz, executive director of documentary programming, CBC Television and CBC Newsworld. “He has earned a reputation for nurturing and developing talent.”

Claydon is a two-time Gemini Award winner with many years of experience at the CBC and working with independent producers. He was the senior producer of Life and Times, overseeing one-hour biographies of influential Canadians, and working closely with independent producers from all parts of the country.

Claydon recently completed Hockey: A People’s History, where, as one of the two senior producers, he oversaw the ten-part television series working closely with colleagues in Radio-Canada (SRC).
