CJOB celebrates 60 years

WINNIPEG – Since March 11, 1946, CJOB-AM has delivered local news, weather and traffic and discussed the issues that matter most to Winnipeg.

Part of the Corus news-talk network, CJOB is the top-rated station in Winnipeg (by a mile) and the home base for Corus Radio’s nationally syndicated talk show, Adler on Line.

Named for its founder John Oliver Blick (JOB), CJOB signed on the air in 1946 on 1340 AM with only 250 watts, according to the Corus press release announcing the anniversary. By 1958 demand was so strong that the station increased its power to 10,000 watts shortly after moving to 680 AM in 1957. In 1964 the studios moved to 930 Portage Avenue, where the station continues to broadcast. It’s been part of the Corus network since 2000.

“With its longstanding talk tradition, achieving this milestone reinforces the cultural significance of the news-talk format. In fact, no other private broadcaster invests more in this format and we’re proud to say that CJOB is the fifth Corus English news-talk station to cross the 60-year mark," said John Hayes, president, Corus Radio, in the release.

“We want to thank the people of Winnipeg,” said Garth Buchko, general manager, Corus Radio Winnipeg. “They have helped us build a radio station that continues to be the market leader in ratings, while being involved with many charitable and community causes in our city. From day one, Jack Blick insisted that CJOB serve its community and we are proud to carry on that tradition.”

The station celebrates this milestone year with a 60th birthday party at the Hotel Fort Garry. Morning show team Larry Updike and Brian Barkley officiate the event, with attendees including contest winners, key clients, CJOB staff and a host of special guests.
