PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. – CityWest will invest $10 million in a fibre-to-the-home build in Prince Rupert, its biggest market, the municipally owned carrier announced late Tuesday.

The build will start later this year, beginning on the eastern-most and western-most points in town.  In addition to offering faster Internet speeds, more HD TV programming, and an improved phone service, the company said the a FTTH build will allow it the flexibility to offer more services in the future, like those related to the Internet of Things.

This work builds on its previous efforts, such as a strong fibre plant in Smithers, Hazelton, and Metlakatla, and its recent fibre build in downtown Terrace, the company said.  CityWest added that it will soon bring the same services to the Jackpine area.

“CityWest started in Prince Rupert, and with this investment, we’re showing that we’re committed to being a part of Prince Rupert’s future,” said CEO Chris Marett, pictured at the announcement.  “We’re making the investment now, so we can prepare for the demand that will come in the future.  In order for our customers to continue getting a great experience from us, we need to invest in fibre-to-the-home.”

Founded in 1910, CityWest provides Internet, TV, and phone services to over 14,000 local residences and businesses in Prince Rupert, Terrace, Kitimat, and Smithers, B.C.
