City looking for Canada’s next “it” girl

TORONTO – Recruiting began Monday in search of Canada’s Next Top Model, a new reality program which will air on all Citytv stations in the spring.

Based on the popular series “America’s Next Top Model”, seen on those same CHUM stations, recruitment of young women to be the next Canuck supermodel will continue for a month.

The show will premiere mid-May, 2006, on Citytv. Canadian actor/model Tricia Helfer (www.triciahelfer.com) will serve as host/producer. Helfer, right, who currently plays the Number Six on the sci-fi series "Battlestar Galactica," came onto the fashion scene in 1992, when, at the age of 18, she won the Ford Super Model of the World Contest.

"Canada has been the source of so many of the world’s modeling superstars, it’s only natural that a search for the next top model would take place here," said Roma Khanna, senior vice-president content, CHUM Television, in a release. "Not only will Canada’s Next Top Model be one of the most compelling talent search shows to connect with audiences across the country, it will make one young girl’s dream come true by launching her career as the next Canadian model to grace the world’s runways."

“’America’s Next Top Model’ has been a big success for Citytv and we anticipate this streak will continue with Canada’s Next Top Model," added Armando Nunez, president, CBS Paramount International Television. "We are proud to add Canada to the growing roster of international territories that have embraced the Top Model format."

"I am excited to see the Next Top Model franchise continue to grow with the launch of Canada’s Next Top Model. Jay Manual (judge/producer of the U.S. show)is Canadian, so he’s thrilled as well," said creator/executive producer/judge Tyra Banks.

Working in association with CBS Paramount International Television, the distributors of "America’s Next Top Model", "Canada’s Next Top Model" will feature 10 young women who think they can make it in the high-stress, high-stakes, no food, world of modeling. The eight-part series will provide dramatic twists and turns as participants compete under pressure, to master the skills that are essential in the profession.

The aspiring models will live together as they learn the ins-and-outs of the fashion world from leading industry experts. Each one-hour episode is built around an important aspect of the modeling profession. “Participants will be asked to demonstrate both inner and outer beauty as they learn to master complicated catwalks, fashion photo shoots and deal with the glare of the media, all under 24-hour-a-day surveillance cameras that chronicle every move. One cast member will be eliminated each week, and the last model standing will win,” says the release.
