MONTREAL — Montreal rock station CHOM 97 7 is marking its 50th anniversary with a special concert in October and weekly programming on Fridays that highlights memorable moments from the radio station’s past 50 years on the air.
CHOM 97 7’s 50th anniversary concert will take place at the MTelus live performance venue in downtown Montreal on October 28 and will feature The Tea Party, Sam Roberts Band, Michel Pagliaro and The Damn Truth. Tickets for the show will go on sale Friday, September 27, at 10 a.m. on Ticketmaster for $9.77, plus taxes and service charges.
Fifty years ago, on October 28, 1969, DJ Doug Pringle launched the radio station with “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. Over its history, CHOM 97 7’s talent behind the microphone has included radio legends such as Terry DiMonte, Tootall, Peppermint Patti and Denis Grondin, who have helped kickstart the careers of many rock giants. For example, CHOM 97 7 was one of the first stations in North America to broadcast the songs of Styx, Supertramp, Genesis, Yes and Chris de Burgh.
To celebrate the station’s 50th anniversary, each Friday morning at 7:10 a.m., Terry DiMonte will reminisce about memorable moments from the past 50 years with a member of the CHOM 97 7 team. Also on Fridays, the “Chronicles of Rock” segment, hosted by Randy Renaud at 2 p.m., will trace the station’s history, going all the way back to its initial broadcast.
“First and foremost, we want to thank our loyal listeners. Over 1.4 million people tune in to the station each week,” said Mathew Wood, program director for CHOM 97 7, in a news release. “CHOM 97 7 would not exist today without their diehard support, and we want to celebrate this historic occasion with them!”
