CHCH-TV names reporter Simone Gavros as new ‘Morning Live’ co-anchor

Hamilton’s CHCH-TV announced Wednesday Simone Gavros will be the new co-anchor of Morning Live starting Monday, June 22, following the retirement of legendary broadcaster and long-time morning show co-anchor Annette Hamm on June 19.

“Over the past three years, the last two as Morning Live’s dedicated reporter, Gavros has become a vital pillar of the CHCH newsroom,” reads a CHCH news release announcing Gavros’s new co-anchor role. “Known for her sharp journalistic instincts, professionalism, and warm on-air presence, she has built a genuine, lasting connection with local viewers.”

Gavros’s work as a CHCH reporter was recently recognized with two Radio Television Digital News Award (RTDNA) nominations.

“The sheer depth of talent and dedication within our newsroom is extraordinary, which made this a very tough decision for us,” said Greg O’Brien, CHCH news director, in a statement. “Simone brings a vibrant energy, meticulous preparation, and a profound passion for storytelling to the screen every morning. We are thrilled to see her step into this new role and help lead the next chapter of Morning Live alongside our world-class news team.”

As Hamm prepares to sign off after 40 years at CHCH, Gavros is looking forward to honouring her predecessor’s standard of excellence while bringing her own perspective when she joins Morning Show co-anchor Rick Zamperin on the desk, CHCH’s announcement said.

“Annette has made immeasurable contributions to our community and leaves behind an undeniable legacy at CHCH,” Gavros said in a statement. “It is a profound honour to follow in her footsteps. While those are massive shoes to fill, I am incredibly excited to join Rick at the desk and continue working alongside our phenomenal morning team to deliver the news our viewers rely on.”

Zamperin, who became co-anchor of CHCH’s morning show just over a year ago, was quoted as saying: “Sharing the morning broadcast with Annette has been an absolute privilege, and while her presence will be missed, I am incredibly excited to welcome Simone to the desk. I look forward to partnering with her as we, alongside our entire dedicated production team, continue to build on the show’s great tradition.”

Morning Live producer Tansy Ko said: “Simone’s adaptability, work ethic, and collaborative spirit make her a natural fit for the anchor desk. The entire control room and crew are excited to support her as we transition into this next chapter of the show.”

In her own statement, outgoing co-anchor Hamm offered her full endorsement of the transition.

“I am absolutely delighted that Simone has been chosen to step into this role,” Hamm said. “She has done an outstanding job as our reporter, demonstrating the heart, curiosity, and dedication this show demands. I look forward to watching Morning Live with Rick and Simone as a viewer at home.”
