CFC says Bruce Smith will lead Bell Media Prime Time TV Program

TORONTO – The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and Bell Media announced this week one of Canada’s top drama showrunners, Bruce Smith, will be the executive producer in residence of the 2019 Bell Media Prime Time TV Program.

From September to December 2019, Smith will lead the story room as well as the six television writers selected to participate in this year’s program as they work together to develop Smith’s original series.

“Bruce Smith is one of Canada’s preeminent showrunners and an award-winning writer of immeasurable talent,” said Tom Hastings, director, original programming, Bell Media, in the press release. “A passionate storyteller universally respected for his generosity and advocacy of emerging talent, his friends at Bell Media could not be more thrilled to have him join the CFC program as this year’s executive producer in residence.”

Smith was most recently creator and showrunner of the Street Legal reboot on CBC and previously he was the showrunner of CTV's 19-2 and of CBC’s Cracked. (CBC).

Smith has forged a distinguished career in Canadian TV, winning multiple Canadian Screen Awards.

“I'm excited to be going to the CFC. This class brings together a group of exceptionally talented writers with a wide variety of experience and each with a strong, distinctive voice,” added Smith in the release. “I look forward to putting them through the wringer.”

The 2019 Bell Media Prime Time TV Program participants are Henry Campbell (B.C.), Imogen Grace (Ont.), Amy Halloran (Que.), Rose Napoli (Ont.), Lori-Ann Russell (Ont.), Ian Steaman (Ont.).

The Bell Media Prime Time TV Program, now in its 20th year, delivers a real-world story room experience and an intense professional and project development process for six TV writers a year.
