CFC announces Blocko! doc series featuring conversations with Black alumni


TORONTO — The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) announced today it will present a new weekly documentary series featuring personal conversations with Black CFC alumni on its YouTube channel, beginning Wednesday, October 14.

The seven-part CFC BLOCKO! series is a call-to-action piece from acclaimed creator Charles Officer (Akilla’s Escape) and produced by Canesugar Filmworks. Premiering October 14 at 4 p.m. ET, the short documentary series will feature 10-minute conversations with six of CFC’s Black alumni as well as CFC founder and award-winning filmmaker Norman Jewison (In the Heat of the Night).

The Black creators featured in the first six episodes include: director/executive producer Clement Virgo (RUDE, The Book of Negroes, Greenleaf); producer Lea Marin (What is Democracy?, Unarmed Verses); writer/co-executive producer Shernold Edwards (A Day Late and a Dollar Short, Haven, Anne With An E); executive producer/media executive Joan Jenkinson (Songs of Freedom, Inside the Mind of Leonardo, Soul); director Dawn Wilkinson (How to Get Away with Murder, Locke & Key); and actor Cara Ricketts (Anne with an E, Far Cry New Dawn). The final episode of the series features a discussion with Jewison about social justice and the responsibility of storytellers.

After the premiere episode on October 14, new episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. ET until November 25, at which time the whole series will be available for viewing. Subscribers to CFC’s YouTube channel will receive reminders when each new CFC BLOCKO! episode is released.
