LAS VEGAS – BlackBerry wants to make connected devices more secure by licensing its software to manufacturers of connected devices such as fitness trackers and smart speakers.

On Monday, the company announced three new BlackBerry Secure feature packs for IoT device manufacturers to securely build smart products without having to develop the technology and deep cybersecurity expertise internally.

BlackBerry added that its cybersecurity experts will review the devices to ensure that they have been developed to its standards before deeming it BlackBerry Secure, what it describes as "a recognized symbol of data security and trust."

Alex Thurber, BlackBerry’s SVP and GM of mobility solutions, said that consumers will be drawn to products that promise a higher level of security and data privacy.

"IoT device manufacturers can address security and privacy concerns head-on and stand out in the cluttered IoT space by bringing to market ultra-secure products that consumers, retailers, and enterprises want to buy and use”, he said in the news release.  “This new service is a pivotal point in the company's software licensing strategy and underscores BlackBerry's evolution from providing the most secure smartphones to delivering the trusted security for all smart 'things'."
