LAS VEGAS – LG Electronics president and CTO Dr. I.P. Park took to the CES stage Monday night to showcase how he believes AI will create a “ better life for everyone.”
During the 60-minute keynote LG's CTO outlined what he called the three key pillars of artificial intelligence – Evolve, Connect and Open that are necessary to create an AI ecosystem with solutions for the real world.
Addressing an audience of more than 3,000 he asked if “technology is making your life better?”
Park made the case that while technology has helped reduce the amount of physical labour we all do (thanks to washing machines, vacuum cleaners etc.) it has done little over the decades to reduce “cognitive labour.”
Think about the latest devices. Manuals, settings, updates. No wonder we feel more tired than ever,” he added.
Park attempted to answer his own question about technology and quality of life by welcoming LG’s four foot high AI robot called CLOi GuideBot on stage (pictured). Give credit to LG for sticking with CLOi who had a disastrous debut at last year’s CES press conference when it failed to respond to questions.
Pointing to CLOi, Park said “the answer lies in AI – but only if we can achieve true intelligence.”
Park was joined onstage by founder of the XPRIZE Foundation Dr. Peter Diamandis. He noted AI and fully autonomous cars will make lives better by the promise of eliminating the 1.3 million deaths annually resulting from crashes.
“Faster, cheaper computers and AI working together will transform our lives,’ he added.
AI he said will also transform health as it “becomes our physicians” through the use of wearables, plantables, consumables that “know exactly what is going on with our health.”
However, for the AI revolution to really take hold it needs to be able to learn independently like humans do and integrate all experiences to bring true benefits explained Diamandis. (Ed note: We’re still a long way away from that…)
AI researcher Dr. Andrew Ng also took to the stage calling the emergence of AI “the new electricity” and like electricity it “will transform every industry… A true AI transformation will require putting together a company-wide AI strategy and strong team and also aligning multiple projects to take advantage of these new AI breakthroughs,” said Ng.
In a video, LG also demonstrated how AI will transform the experience and the physical space inside autonomous vehicles.
LG's driverless car of the future surrounds passengers with video screen where you do everything from shopping, watch videos and even start international video chats with real time language interpretation to transform your car into a mobile office. (Ed note: Are we sure that all sounds like a good thing?)
Park cautioned that LG can’t achieve its vision for autonomous vehicles alone and that it will require a “wide range of solutions in both hardware and software,” and open collaboration… It’s simply about all of us working together to combine our strengths and offer the very best possible experience to our customers.”
As an , he noted LG's collaboration with seat manufacturer Adient to develop smart seats for a more personalized in-car experience. Park also announced LG will be adding open access this year to webOS (its proprietary AI platform) for developers all around the world.
Park concluded his keynote by looking ahead to how LG will leverage AI to create intelligent systems. He described how LG's Robot Service Delivery Platform could systematically co-ordinate what multiple robots see, hear and learn to transform how people manage their work and our environment. Such an AI-based smart grid “will allow us to radically improve the efficiency of our energy ecosystem, from production and storage to consumption.” Intelligent signage, he promised, could will turn walls, signboards and even floors, into an active, intelligent part of the environment.
