CBC unveils winter 2024 programming slate


CBC announced Monday streaming and broadcast premiere dates for its winter 2024 slate of new and returning programming on CBC Gem and CBC TV, including more than 20 original series from Canadian creators, producers and storytellers.

CBC TV’s original comedy lineup returns on Tuesday, Jan. 9 with the addition of new series One More Time, a workplace comedy about a second-hand sporting goods store created by and starring stand-up comedian D.J. Demers, premiering at 9 p.m. local time (9:30 in NL). CBC’s Tuesday comedy schedule sees the continuation of season 31 of This Hour Has 22 Minutes at 8 p.m. (8:30 NL), and the return of Son of a Critch for a third season at 8:30 p.m. (9 p.m. NL) and season three of Run the Burbs premiering at 9:30 p.m. (10 p.m. NL).

New drama series premiering on CBC include Wild Cards (Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. local time, 8:30 NL), a Vancouver-set, comedic crime-solving procedural that follows the unlikely duo of by-the-book, sardonic cop Ellis (played by Giacomo Gianniotti, Grey’s Anatomy) and clever con woman Max (Vanessa Morgan, Riverdale). CBC announced Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills, 90210) is joining the cast as a recurring guest star, playing Max’s father and master con man George.

Also premiering on CBC this winter is Allegiance, a police procedural set in Surrey, B.C., “about identity and belonging, policing and politics, and finding truth within the heart of a flawed justice system,” reads a synopsis in a CBC press release. Premiering Feb. 7 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NL), the series stars Supinder Wraich (Sort Of), Enrico Colantoni (Station Eleven), Stephen Lobo (Continuum), Adolyn H. Dar (Superman & Lois), Brian Markinson (A Million Little Things) and David Cubitt (Virgin River).

CBC’s winter factual entertainment lineup includes new unscripted comedy Ghosting with Luke Hutchie and Matthew Finlan (Jan. 26 on CBC Gem) and new competition series The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down (Feb. 8 on CBC TV at 8 p.m., 8:30 NL), joining new seasons of Best in Miniature (Dec. 26 on CBC TV at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., 8:30 and 9:30 NL), Bollywed (Jan. 14 on CBC TV at 7 p.m., 7:30 NL) and Push (Jan. 14 on CBC TV at 7:30 p.m., 8:00 NL).

New documentary series For the Culture with Amanda Parris will premiere Jan. 30 on CBC Gem. “In this documentary series, award-winning writer, executive producer and host Amanda Parris leaves the wars raging on social media to create space for urgent and provocative conversations that centre Blackness and Black folks,” the press release says.

The Nature of Things returns to CBC TV for season 63 on Jan. 4 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NL), with new hosts Sarika Cullis-Suzuki and Anthony Morgan picking up the mantle from iconic environmentalist and science broadcaster David Suzuki, who retired from the show at the end of season 62.

As previously announced, Travis Dhanraj is taking over hosting duties on Canada Tonight, starting Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. (7:30 NL) on CBC News Network.

CBC also announced About That with Andrew Chang, currently available on CBC News Explore and CBC Gem, will broadcast on CBC TV starting Jan. 5 at 8:30 p.m. (9:00 NL).
