CBC TV overhauls senior management team, splits GM role in two

TORONTO – CBC has revamped its senior TV management team, promoting Wilson, Bristow and Platt.

The Corp said Wednesday that effective April 4th, Christine Wilson will assume the role of executive director, content planning; Julie Bristow will become executive director, studio and unscripted programming; and Phyllis Platt will take on the new role of (interim) executive director, commissioned and scripted programming.  All three will report to Kirstine Stewart, EVP of CBC English Services.

“In their new roles, Christine, Julie, Phyllis and their teams will be better able to implement our current strategies leading to 2015 and fulfill our mission as a leading-edge, modern public broadcaster,” Stewart said in the announcement. “We are a content organization and great content is the product of best strategy, best innovation, best creativity and best delivery. To achieve this, we need integrated decision-making and an organizational structure that aligns activities which are closely related.”

Wilson (right) will be responsible for the overall look and feel of the English Services schedules and content offer across all platforms. This will include establishing long-term plans for content, identifying how it can best be used across all services and responsibility for decisions about renewals, pickups, acquisitions and cancellations.

The former general manager, CBC Television role has been divided into two roles, Studio and Unscripted Programming and Commissioned and Scripted Programming.

Bristow (left) will be responsible for overseeing development and production of network television programming that is studio-based or produced in a live setting, including sports, factual programming and unscripted comedy. She and her team will also provide consultation and program development direction to programming heads in other content areas such as news and radio.

Platt (below, right) will assume the position of executive director, commissioned and scripted programming on an interim basis pending the return of Sally Catto.  This unit comprises documentary programming under Mark Starowicz, children and youth programming under Kim Wilson, scripted comedy under Jenny Hacker, drama under Tom Hastings, and digital channels under Bruce Cowley.
