CBC Shanghai’s Germain

OTTAWA – The CBC has tabbed Anthony Germain to head up its new CBC News bureau in Shanghai, China.

Anthony, CBC Radio One’s Ottawa Morning and CBC News: The House host, will be responsible for delivering Canadians the important international stories from the fastest growing part of the world.

“It was a difficult decision leaving both Ottawa Morning and The House,” says Germain (right) in the CBC release. “We have a great audience, a great team behind us and it’s something that very few hosts get the privilege of actually having. It’s a huge challenge and a huge change for me, but one that I just couldn’t say no to. China presents the kind of challenge journalists dream about.”

His 10-plus years of reporting, including covering conflicts in Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia make him the ideal representative for this challenging role, says the CBC release. CBC Radio listeners across the country know Germain from his days as the national affairs correspondent on Parliament Hill and from hosting CBC News: The House.

With its opening of a news bureau in Shanghai, “CBC News is another step closer to delivering on the results of its recent News Study – that urges expansion of CBC’s international coverage. The recent CBC News Study reinforces how important international news is to Canadians,” says the release.

In the past year, CBC News has also created new bureaus in Nairobi, Kenya and Los Angeles, bringing our total count to 13, including Shanghai. The new bureau will be set up and operational between the beginning of March and end of April.
