TORONTO – The CBC says that ratings are up for their local and national newscasts.
Its Toronto television supper hour news was the only local news show to gain audience in the Greater Toronto Area for the period from October 6 to December 14, 2008, according to the press release. Audiences for ‘CBC News at Six with Diana Swain’ jumped 50% and increased 2 share points, compared with last season.
Ratings for CBC News: The National grew 17% over last season based on the first 16 weeks of the 2008/09 season, while audiences for The National on CBC Newsworld grew 28% over the 2007/08 season.
CBC Television grew its overall market share to 8.9%, which executive director of network programming Kirstine Layfield described as “a success of historic proportions.”
“Our current prime time audience share represents an increase of two full percentage points since the 2002/03 season,” said Layfield in the release. “This, simply put, is an increase of 30% in a highly competitive marketplace with an ever-increasing selection of channels to choose from.”
