NEW YORK — CBC has been chosen as broadcaster of the year by the New York Festivals (NYF) Radio Awards, announced Tuesday as part of the NYF’s 2020 Storytellers Gala awards ceremony, which had to go virtual due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
CBC was honoured for several award-winning entries that explored news, entertainment, sports and music. The public broadcaster’s gold-trophy winning entries from CBC Radio and Audio included Tai Asks Why, Uncover the Village, The Band Played On, MMIWG Final Report and PlayMe. CBC also won several silver and bronze trophies and was a finalist in numerous categories as well.
“It is truly an honour to be recognized as broadcaster of the year amongst so many award-winning international colleagues. It is a testament to the level of dedication and depth of talent of CBC programmers across the country and their commitment to producing quality content. On behalf of CBC Radio and Audio, I would also like to express my gratitude to the New York Festival for this incredible recognition,” said Cathy Perry, executive director of CBC current affairs and investigative programming, in the news release.
In addition, CBC Podcasts was awarded a Grand trophy for its Hunting Warhead podcast series in the Reports/Features: Best Investigative Reporting category. Hunting Warhead follows the determined journalists and police on a global mission to expose the man behind username Warhead who ran Child’s Play, a site on the dark web with more than a million users trafficking child abuse material. Host Daemon Fairless tracked down the investigators, survivors and criminals themselves. The series was a co-production between CBC Podcasts and the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang.
“On behalf of everyone at CBC Podcasts, I am thrilled that the extraordinary work done by our team has been recognized in such a profound way. And we are truly humbled to accept the Grand award for Hunting Warhead, along with our incredible partners at Verdens Gang in Norway. It is an important and underreported story and our hope is that this honour helps it reach more people,” said Leslie Merklinger, senior director of CBC Podcasts, in the news release.
