
CANADA DAY IS GOING virtual this year, and CBC/Radio-Canada is preparing to showcase a full day’s worth of celebrations from coast-to-coast-to-coast on its TV, radio and digital platforms.
Special Canada Day programming will air on CBC TV, ICI Radio-Canada Télé, CBC News Network, ICI RDI, CBC Radio One, ICI Radio-Canada Première, CBC Music, ICI Musique, and the CBC Gem and ICI TOU.TV streaming services.
“This will be a Canada Day like no other. During this remarkable period of social distancing, reflection and change, the national public broadcaster is proud to bring the country together in a virtual celebration of Canadian culture, voices and perspectives,” said Catherine Tait, president and CEO, in the news release.
Here are some of the highlights.
Canada Day 2020 daytime:
- CBC News: Canada Day Special, anchored by Andrew Chang, checks in with Canadians on the frontline of the pandemic and the protests, and with communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast to see how they are celebrating differently this year as the country slowly reopens.
- Canada Day Across the Country, hosted by Serena Ryder (pictured, left) and Pierre-Yves Lord (right), features artists from Yellowknife, Calgary, Winnipeg, Sudbury, Montréal, Québec City and Moncton.
- Fête du Canada, hosted by Daniel Thibeault and Madeleine Blais-Morin, provides special news coverage to show how people are celebrating coast-to-coast and also highlights the formidable work of people on the frontline of the fight against Covid-19.
- The CBC Virtual Orchestra remotely unites 35 Canadian classical musicians from 28 orchestras across every province for an online performance of Vivian Fung’s new original composition “Prayer”, recorded in isolation with renowned conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Canada Day 2020 evening:
- Canada Day Together, hosted by Serena Ryder and Pierre-Yves Lord, includes virtual fireworks and performances and appearances from Canadian personalities, musicians, dancers, poets and storytellers, including Alan Doyle, Alanis Morissette, Alexandra Stréliski, Avril Lavigne, Chris Boucher, Corneille, Haviah Mighty, The Jerry Cans, Natasha Kanapé Fontaine, Ryan Reynolds, Sarah McLachlan, Tom Jackson and many more.
