TORONTO — CBC announced today it has hired Leaticia Kaggwa (above) for a newly created role as environmental sustainability lead.
This new position was created to support CBC’s new carbon footprint requirement announced in November 2021 (which Cartt.ca wrote about here).
Kaggwa will report to Lisa Clarkson, executive director of business and rights and content optimization at CBC.
“We are putting environmentally sustainable thinking into everything we do, and creating this new role is part of that commitment,” Clarkson said, in a press release announcing Kaggwa’s appointment.
“Leaticia brings a unique combination of education in sustainability management, industry knowledge and practical know-how from running her own business in a sustainable way to this role, which will support the acceleration of more sustainable production practices,” Clarkson said.
In her new role, Kaggwa “will support CBC productions in their use of the albert carbon calculator and share the lessons learned from calculator use as well as advancing other sustainability changes,” the press release says.
“Kaggwa will also help drive focused environmental change and action by working closely with all of CBC’s in-house and external independent producers to adopt greener production practices (including the albert calculator), greener storytelling and additional changes to help advance environmentally sustainable decision making and action,” the release adds.
Kaggwa has a strong background in commerce and sustainability, according to the press release. In addition to launching a product and apparel business that was both profitable and environmentally sustainable, Kaggwa recently researched and helped lead a new strategy to increase sustainable production practices at William F. White International, the release says.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Alberta and will soon finish a master’s degree in sustainability management at the University of Toronto.
Her other recent experience includes working as a climate and sustainable production instructor for Ontario Creates and serving as an environmental committee member for the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, according to her LinkedIn profile.
