TORONTO — With the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics opening ceremony only two days away, and some women’s team sports competitions already underway, CBC is helping Canadians get into the Olympic spirit by releasing new daily content across its multiple platforms, including TV, web, mobile apps and social media, the broadcaster announced today.
CBC’s live coverage of preliminary competitions continues tonight at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT as Canada’s women’s softball team competes against Team USA. (Early this morning, Canada beat Mexico in its opening game, which aired live on CBC TV.)
On Thursday, July 22 at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT), CBC TV will premiere Up in the Air, an hour-long documentary produced by CBC Sports’ Brenda Irving that follows members of Canada’s women’s gymnastics team on their journey to compete in Tokyo. The documentary provides a behind-the-scenes look at the struggles and triumphs of Canada’s gymnasts, including Ellie Black, Brooklyn Moors, Shallon Olsen, Ana Padurariu, Ava Stewart, Rose Woo and Victoria Woo.
CBC has also created three new digital series, The Extra Hour, While You Were Sleeping and The Whiparound, to keep audiences up-to-date with major storylines from Tokyo. These series are available to stream on all of CBC’s social and digital platforms, including YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, cbc.ca/tokyo2020, CBC Gem and the CBC Olympics app for iOS and Android devices.
The CBC Olympics app will also feature more than 2,500 hours of live sport, up-to-the-minute results and personalized alerts.
In addition, @CBCOlympics will capture all of the moments from the Summer Games with added insight from analysts and athletes through the CBC Olympics Instagram, Twitter and Facebook feeds. Also, new for Tokyo 2020, the CBC Sports TikTok account takes Canadians behind-the-scenes with content created by CBC’s social producers in Toronto and Tokyo.
Finally, the award-winning CBC Kids Olympic Games website (cbckids.ca/tokyo2020) is back with videos, activities, quizzes, blog posts and fun facts about each Olympic sport and host country Japan. Plus, CBC Kids News is launching a new series, KN Explains, where Arjun Ram and Abigail Dove break down an Olympic topic, event or moment that everyone is talking about.
