CBC announces Canada Day programming on all platforms

TORONTO — CBC announced today it will offer a full lineup of Canada Day programming across its TV, radio and digital platforms, “showcasing voices, music and perspectives from communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast,” according to a press release.

Starting at 11 a.m. ET on July 1, CBC TV, CBC News Network and CBC Gem will air CBC News Special: Canada Day 2022, hosted by Vassy Kapelos with reporting from CBC’s senior parliamentary reporters Hannah Thibedeau and Travis Dhanraj.

This special “is a chance to reconnect after a two year hiatus from in-person Canada Day celebrations,” the press release reads. The broadcast will air live from LeBreton Flats in Ottawa and feature speeches from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon. A moment of Indigenous reflection is planned.

On stage in Ottawa, Anne-Marie Withenshaw and Shaun Majumder will join a lineup of talented acts, including Boogat, Chantal Kreviazuk, DJ Shub, Gurdeep Pandher, Josiane, Kellie Loder, Lisa LeBlanc, Riit, Sarahmée, Sebastian Gaskin and Tenille Townes.

At 8 p.m. local time (9 p.m. AT, 9:30 p.m. NT), CBC TV, CBC News Network and CBC Gem will air the Canada Day Evening Special, hosted by Isabelle Racicot and Ali Hassan and featuring performances by Ariane Moffatt, Charlotte Cardin, Cindy Bédard, Gurdeep Pandher, Johnny Reid, Neon Dreams, Riit, Salebarbes, Samian, Sarahmée, Sebastian Gaskin, Tenille Arts, Walk Off the Earth and William Prince.

Over on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen, from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. local time, the special A Canada For Everyone will be hosted by Jeff Douglas, Marc Winkler and Stephen Quinn from Halifax, Yellowknife and Vancouver, respectively. This program “will explore all that Canada could be, with topics ranging from anti-systemic racism efforts, to the importance of using Indigenous place names,” the release explains.

Starting at 8 a.m. local time (8:30 NT) on CBC Music and 4 p.m. local time on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen, the one-hour special The Best of CBC Music’s Toyota Searchlight 2022 will showcase the top song entries from CBC Music’s annual contest, “starting on the East coast, and heading West and North to hear the vibrant music being made in Canada today,” the release says. The special is hosted by Grant Lawrence.

Also on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen, The Great Canadian Goose Show will air at noon local time (12:30 NT). This lighthearted celebration of the iconic Canada goose “explores stories that reflect the country’s relationships with these antagonistic, but emblematic birds.”

From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time (3:30 NT), CBC Music’s Drive: Rich’s Remixes will air on CBC Music and CBC Listen. Host Rich Terfry will remix and re-imagine iconic Canadian songs from artists such as Drake, Jann Arden, Bryan Adams and Shad.

At 5 p.m. local time (5:30 NT), CBC Radio One and CBC Listen will air The Same Boat. “Many people living in Canada have family in other countries who they depend on and who depend on them,” the release says, explaining “this special explores Canada’s connections to the rest of the world. Hosts Jennifer Chen and Idil Mussa take a look at how these families found other ways to connect while the pandemic kept them apart, and what it has been like for some of them to finally reunite in person.”

Finally, from 6 a.m. to midnight, CBC Music will feature solely Canadian music on air across Mornings, Tempo, About Time, Drive, Marvin’s Room, The Block and Afterdark.
