CBC adds Mandarin to Olympics coverage

TORONTO – The CBC announced today that it will offer a daily online Olympic highlights package in Mandarin. Beginning Aug. 9, and continuing through to Aug. 24, four web sites, including CBCSports.ca, will feature the daily Mandarin-language Olympic highlights package.

“CBC is committed to providing all Canadians with the most comprehensive coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games,” said Joel Darling, director of production, CBC Sports. “This is a great opportunity to serve more of Canada’s rich and diverse communities and CBCSports.ca is an ideal platform to reach them and bring them closer to the Games.”

The highlights in Mandarin will be available on a daily basis, capturing the top stories from each day during the Beijing Olympic Games. In addition to CBCSports.ca, the highlights package will be available on Radio Canada International’s web site, rciviva.ca; Radio-Canada’s web site, radio-canada.ca; and on cbc.ca/bc/chinesenews, a new comprehensive web site launched on July 22, providing CBC British Columbia’s local, national and international news in Chinese-language.

The follows CBC’s other third-language productions such as its Hockey Day In Canada NHL game coverage in Italian in 2007, and in Mandarin, Cantonese and Hindi in 2008. Hockey Night In Canada also provided coverage of the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs in Mandarin and Punjabi.
