TORONTO – The senior executive shuffles continue at the CBC.
Last week, the Corp announced that Sally Catto is returning to CBC Television as Creative Head of Drama, replacing Susan Morgan, who quit last week. Morgan was in the position since 2003.
From 2001 to 2005, Catto served as an executive in charge of production for drama at CBC Television and was responsible for the development, licensing and production of a broad menu of drama for broadcast, acted as story editor on projects in development, selected submissions from writers and producers to become part of our development slate, and supervised production and delivery of drama programming for the network’s prime time schedule.
“This is excellent news for TV Arts & Entertainment, and indeed for everyone in CBC Television as we continue to pursue our plans to significantly increase the amount of drama and entertainment programming we air in prime time.” said Fred Fuchs, executive director of arts and entertainment for CBC Television, in the release announcing Catto’s hiring.
From 2005 to the present, Catto worked as a consultant with SBS Independent, a division of the Special Broadcasting Service, one of Australia’s national public broadcasters.
Prior to her work at CBC, she was a production and development executive with Accent Entertainment; an agent for authors’ film rights, screenwriters and directors with Harrison Artist Management and Westwood Creative Artists.
Morgan moves on after leading such shows as Human Cargo (winner of the Peabody Award, among other awards) and the multiple-award-winning Sex Traffic, which received the Prix Italia for best TV movie/miniseries. "As well, she was instrumental in the production of The Tommy Douglas Story, the pilot for Chris Haddock’s new series Intelligence, and the upcoming Jozi H. These projects required careful relationship-building and close collaboration with multiple partners, skills at which Susan excels," said the memo from Fuchs.
Susan first arrived at CBC as a casting director, which led to her becoming deputy head of talent. She later moved into series production and then to creative head of drama series, where she had a hand in such programs as North of 60, Da Vinci’s Inquest, H2O and Trudeau.
