OTTAWA – Cape Breton is the latest region to receive faster, more reliable high-speed Internet as part of the federal government’s Connecting Canadians program.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development minister Navdeep Bains said Monday that Acadian Communications is receiving approximately $46,000 to increase broadband Internet access for approximately 400 households in Chéticamp and surrounding areas on Cape Breton Island.

"Helping to extend high-speed Internet across the country is one of the most important infrastructure investments the Government of Canada can make to help unlock the tremendous potential of our country's northern and rural regions”, said Minister Bains, in the news release.  “By working with partners across the country, the Government is helping to deliver increased broadband coverage to underserved areas across Canada."

"With financial help from Connecting Canadians, Acadian Communications Ltd. was able to improve the signal to its customers and offer them much higher speed”, added Acadian Communications president Eric Chiasson.  “The financial help made a huge difference as we, being a small company, would not have been able to offer this increased speed without support from Connecting Canadians."
