CanWest promotes Boston, who hires Chin

TORONTO – CanWest MediaWorks this morning announced the appointment of Kenton Boston as senior executive producer, Global National and News Specials.

In this position, Mr. Boston will be responsible for the overall operations of Global National with Kevin Newman, which is now airing seven days a week with anchor Tara Nelson hosting on the weekends.

"Kenton has distinguished himself as one of the best producers in the country,” said Steve Wyatt, senior vice-president, news and information. "His experience and strong leadership skills will be a tremendous asset as we build on the success of Global National."

Boston joined Global National in February of this year as the executive producer for Eastern Canada, bringing with him over 15 years experience in both radio and television. Prior to joining Global, Boston worked at CTV for 10 years, holding a variety of senior positions including that of senior producer for the network’s flagship morning show, Canada AM.

"I am honoured to join the Global National team and look forward to building on an already strong news organization," said Boston.

Then, this afternoon, Boston announced the hiring of Ben Chin as senior Correspondent, Global National with Kevin Newman.

"We’re thrilled to have Ben join the Global National team," said Boston. "Ben is an experienced, well respected journalist and news anchor, and is extremely popular with television viewers."

Chin helped launch Toronto 1 in September 2003, co-anchoring its flagship news magazine Toronto Tonight and hosting numerous specials. Toronto Tonight staffers were recently told the show was being cancelled.

Before joining Toronto 1, Mr. Chin worked at CBC News and CBC Newsworld for five years, hosting Canada Now in Toronto, Saturday Report, Newsworld Today, as well as guest-hosting The National and Sunday Report. He was on the anchor desk for many live breaking news specials, including the aftermath of 9/11, the launch of the U.S. attacks in Afghanistan, the war in Kosovo, and the tainted water scandal in Walkerton. He also served as bureau chief and reporter for CTV News’ Atlantic bureau after beginning his broadcast journalism career at Citytv in 1989 as a reporter-anchor.

"I’m honored to be joining Global National with Kevin Newman, and excited by the opportunity to work with a team of journalists who have so quickly established such a high standard of quality," said Chin in the press release. "I’m looking forward to the challenge of living up to that record and contributing to the future development of the network’s news organization. And on a personal note, I’m eager to get back on the road to report once again, tell compelling stories and help set the agenda in the Toronto Bureau."
