CanWest MediaWorks follows US networks to fill fall primetime slots

TORONTO – CanWest MediaWorks has announced the fall 2006 primetime schedules for the Global and CH television networks.

"We’re focused and passionate about building on the momentum and successes we’ve achieved over this last year," said Kathleen Dore, CanWest MediaWorks President, TV & Radio. "With that goal in mind, our team’s buy included a selective acquisition of programs hand-picked by each of the big four US networks as priorities with the greatest breakthrough potential – positioned in key timeslots, with all-important hit series lead-ins. From Vanished at FOX, to Shark at CBS, The Black Donnellys at NBC, and Brothers & Sisters and Six Degrees at ABC, CanWest is proud to showcase these franchises and more for audiences and advertisers."

Here are some of the highlight shows.

Law-based Shark, with James Woods and Jeri Ryan, from executive producer Brian Grazer and director Spike Lee.

Brothers & Sisters: Calista Flockhart and Rachel Griffiths from exec producer, Ken Olin (Alias).

The Black Donnellys, about a Boston-mob family from Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco.

Six Degrees: starring Jay Hernandez from JJ Abrahms (Alias).

Kidnapped: a thriller starring Dana Delany and Timothy Hutton.

Vanished: from Josh Berman (CSI).

According to CanWest, much hype can be made about Canadian shows to launch this Fall, including “’Til Death Do Us Part: a quirky anthology series profiling unconventional marital relationships (with Court TV, from Blueprint Entertainment – "Whistler", "Playing House"); Class: a one hour drama set against the backdrop of university life (with The N, from Exec. Producer, Aaron Martin "Degrassi TNG"); more than 25 mystery/thriller movies (with Lifetime Network, from a variety of Canadian Producers); and Quill: a one-hour primetime drama featuring the story of a counter-terrorism operative whose memory has been erased (European Co-Production, from Pebblehut/QVF Inc).”

Also launching this Fall is Global Currents with Host Kevin Newman. This weekly documentary show explores Canadians’ societal issues.
