Canwest integrates new corporate logo, web site

TORONTO – With the release of its first quarter results and annual general meeting today, Canwest also unwrapped its new corporate logo, a radical departure from its existing and past branding.

“Representing many of the best media brands both in Canada and internationally, the new brand and singular name – “Canwest” (note the lower case “w” now) – was developed to affirm a common purpose amongst its properties and reflect the company’s vision for the future,” reads the press release.

The new logo (pictured) was inspired by the honeycomb, “considered revolutionary in the engineering world as the design allowed structures to be much stronger than they would otherwise be,” continues the release.

“The icon also symbolizes individual cells – media platforms, brands and business units – brought together into one solid, unified shape which is representative of Canwest as a tightly bound, highly integrated media organization. The green hexagons, which highlight the letter “C” angle outwards – pointing towards the future, showing reach, extension and expansion,” it explains.

“Our new brand and logo are designed to illustrate that Canwest is many parts which are different and distinct, but that by working together we leverage the power of the group to produce even better content, promote it more effectively and provide highly innovative and integrated solutions to our clients” said Leonard Asper, president and CEO, in a statement. “Our portfolio of assets, which extend across publishing (largest Canadian chain of newspapers), broadcasting (Global Television, TVtropolis, HGTV, Showcase, etc.), out of home and new media, provide advertisers with the opportunity to reach more consumers across a variety of platforms – vital factors for success in today’s complex and sophisticated media market.”

The new brand was developed by StudioOutsource Inc., a Toronto graphic design agency specializing in corporate brand articulation. StudioOutsource also worked with Canwest to develop their HR brand.

Concurrent with the brand launch, Canwest also debuts its newly redesigned web site which can be viewed at www.canwest.com.
