OTTAWA – Nearly a third of Canadians own a tablet computer, and two-thirds of Anglophone Canadians own an HD screen TV, according to two new reports from Media Technology Monitor.
Income is the driving force behind adoption of tablets, reads MTM’s report, “The Rise of Tablet Computers,” as close to 60% of high-income earners own a tablet. In terms of brands, tablets are still dominated by Apple, however other manufacturers have carved out some market share.
The second report, “High Definition, 3D & Smart TVs,” examines key trends in Canada’s TV market and their penetration rates, as well as factors influencing adoption.
The report notes that the HDTV market is nearing maturity, as 68% of Anglophones now have an HD screen. Francophones are more likely to own an HD receiver than Anglophones (55% vs. 46%, respectively).
3D TV sets have been slower to take off in Canada, as just 7% of Anglophones own a 3D TV set. High prices and limited content available continue to act as a barrier to adoption, says the report.
One in five Anglophones own smart TVs, and less than half of that group are accessing the Net from their sets.
Both reports are now available to subscribers on the MTM website. MTM is the research arm of the CBC.
