TORONTO – Some 80% of Canadians polled said they would spend about the same or more on leisure and lifestyle purchases this Christmas, up 7% from last year, and 80% indicated they had a digital lifestyle product on their wish list, according to a national survey by Solutions Research Group.
The research also revealed:
• The top three Christmas wish list items were: flat screen HD television set (on the list of 30%), digital camera (21%) and new laptop (20%).
• Although Apple’s iPhone is not yet available in Canada, it was ranked number seven among teens and young adults and number eight among women.
• HD sets were at the top of the list for adults, but was number five for teens aged 12-19.
• Laptops were the most popular item among teens (32%)
• GPS navigation for cars is moving into the mainstream; it was in the top 10 of both men and women.
Based on the popularity of the HD television set revealed in the survey, Solutions Research Group estimates that 36% of Canadian households will own an HD set by early spring 2008, up from only 24% today. However, only one-in-ten potential HDTV buyers intend to also purchase an HD box from their TV distributor.
Survey data comes from the third quarter edition of Fast Forward, Solutions Research Group’s quarterly consumer trend research. The results are based on an online survey of 1,000 Canadians aged 12 and older in August 2007.
