TORONTO – The Friday morning nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton were watched by over 5 million Canadians, or nearly 38% of the population, according to preliminary data from BBM Canada.
The wedding ceremony and procession, which aired Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. ET, had an average minute audience of 5.22 million viewers, 39% of which were male and 61% were female. A total of 12.55 million unique viewers (37.8% of the population) watched some portion of the ceremony and procession.
Audiences were highest in Atlantic Canada, where approximately 531,000, or 56.2% of the region, watched at least part of the event. That was followed by Ontario, with a 2,818,000 average minute audience and a 51.6% reach, and English-speaking residents of Quebec with 235,000 and a 51.5% reach.
The percentage of French-speaking residents in Quebec who tuned in was 31.6, or 652,000 people, while an audience of 609,000 (23.5%) was recorded in the Prairies. About 379,000 people (13.3%) of British Columbians watched.
