
SEVERAL CANADIAN TELECOMS have decided to continue waiving fees for Canadians connecting to loved ones in Ukraine.
As Cartt.ca reported last month, many Canadian telecoms chose to waive fees for calls and texts from Canada to Ukraine, with several stating they intended to do so until the end of this month. Most, however, have now extended this deadline.
SaskTel announced last Friday it will continue to waive long-distance charges for wireless, landline and business calls from Canada to Ukraine, international text messages from Canada to Ukraine and roaming charges for calls, texts and data overages for customers currently in Ukraine, until June 30.
Cogeco tweeted today it would continue waiving charges on long-distance calls to Ukraine.
Telus tweeted today it would be extending its support through May 31. The company is waiving long-distance charges for calls and texts made from Canada to Ukraine.
Shaw tweeted today it will continue to waive its long-distance and SMS fees for calls and texts to Ukraine.
In addition, Bell, Rogers, Distributel, Beanfield and TekSavvy told Cartt.ca via email they are continuing to waive their fees. Eastlink confirmed to Cartt.ca it is doing this as well and plans to do so until the end of May.
TextNow is no longer waiving fees at this point but has lowered its rate. The company’s website says customers can make calls to Ukraine from $0.20 per minute.
Cartt.ca reached out to Videotron and Xplornet* for an update as well as they were part of our original story, but we have not yet heard back from them.
*Update, March 30: Xplornet confirmed with Cartt.ca it will continue to waive long distance charges for calls from Canada to Ukraine for home phone and mobile (Xplornet and Xplore Mobile) until May 31.
Videotron sent out a press release this afternoon saying it will continue to suspend fees for international calls from Canada to Ukraine until the end of April.
