TORONTO – Longtime broadcaster Erin Davis (pictured) will be honoured during Canadian Music Week at its annual broadcast industry awards gala at Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto on Thursday, May 21, 2020.
“We are proud to welcome Erin Davis to the Canadian Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame,” said Canadian Music Week president Neill Dixon in a press release. “Throughout her career, Erin has commanded a loyal fanbase who have followed her from the airwaves, to screen, stage and online. From tragedy to triumph, she has welcomed us into her life and put her heart on her sleeve, which makes her one of Canada’s most loved broadcasters.”
Davis came to Toronto after having worked at CKLW Windsor where she was the first female co-host in the powerful Detroit market. In 1988 she came to Toronto and called CHFI 981.FM in Toronto home for over 28 years, when she began doing news on Don Daynard’s highly rated show. She soon became his co-host and the show was a ratings leader right through his retirement in 1999. She then hosted with Bob Magee until June 2003.
Station owner Rogers then “went another way” with the morning show, only to have Davis return two years later with new co-host Mike Cooper in 2005. They were then a highly-rated staple on Toronto radio for more than a decade.
Davis’ retirement from morning radio in 2015 came approximately 18 months after her only daughter Lauren died in her sleep of unknown causes in May 2015 at the age of 24. Davis penned a memoir about it, Mourning Has Broken: Love, Loss & Reclaiming Joy, released in February 2019 and was listed in the Globe & Mail and Toronto Star top ten lists for 2019.
CMW also announced its radio summit will be rebooted for 2020. The revamped and rebooted “audio explosion” will see a full two days dedicated to everything that reaches listeners via streaming, podcasting and broadcasting. “It’s a technological, sociological and business-oriented deep dive, featuring workshops, sessions and more celebrity and international speakers than ever before,” says the conference release.
“Global experts from the worlds of programming, branding, revenue, over-the-air, digital, social media, tech and regulatory will all attend.
