Canadian broadcasters to provide live coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral


SEVERAL CANADIAN BROADCASTERS will air live coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday, Sept. 19.

The funeral itself will take place at Westminster Abbey and is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. ET.

CBC will broadcast CBC News Special: Funeral for Queen Elizabeth on CBC TV, CBC News Network and CBC Gem starting at 5 a.m. ET.

Coverage will be led by CBC News’ chief correspondent, Adrienne Arsenault and Morning Live host Heather Hiscox live from London, a press release says.

The national public broadcaster will also cover the funeral on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen starting at 5:30 a.m. The Current’s Matt Galloway will provide coverage live from London while World Report’s Marcia Young will report live from Toronto.

Bell Media’s CTV News will broadcast Queen Elizabeth II: State Funeral starting at 4 a.m. ET on CTV, CTV News Channel, CP24, CTVNews.ca and on the CTV and CTV News apps. Led live from London by Omar Sachedina, CTV’s new chief news anchor and senior editor, the special program will capture and commemorate the Queen’s life and 70-year reign.

CHCH will also air the funeral live beginning at 5:30 am.

“Reporters throughout the United Kingdom capital join the broadcast providing insight and interviews, with special feature contributions also coming from a number of CTV News journalists, including Chief International Correspondent Paul Workman, who covered the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales, and HRH Prince Philip, as well as special guest and royal commentator Afua Hagan,” a press release explains.

Rogers Sports and Media’s CityNews will broadcast Commemorating the life of Queen Elizabeth II, a six-hour live news special from London starting a 5 a.m. ET. Anchored by former CTV anchor Lisa LaFlamme, the special will be available on Citytv and CityNews 24/7.

Royal historian and author Helen Carr, award-winning Canadian culture author Daniel Richler and others will join LaFlamme “to bring this unprecedented world event home to Canadians,” a post on CityNews’ website says.

Corus Entertainment’s Global News will broadcast Farewell to the Queen starting at 5 a.m. ET. The network “will provide a historical special coverage of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II with Dawna Friesen live from London, UK and Mercedes Stephenson from Ottawa, ON,” a press release says.
