Canadian Anglophones still bingeing as Netflix subscriptions top 47%: MTM

OTTAWA – Despite pressure from new competitors and online TV services, the majority of Anglophones still subscribe to television services, according to a new report from Media Technology Monitor (MTM).

The Media Technology Adoption for Fall 2015 is a summary of penetration trends for many of the technologies measured by the MTM, including audio and video technologies delivered over traditional, Internet and mobile platforms.  The technologies are presented in relation to the different stages of technology adoption, starting with the innovation stage and ending with the decline stage.

Highlights from the report include:

– Mobile devices have taken hold with over half of all Anglophones owning a tablet and nine in ten own a cell phone, the vast majority of which are smartphones;

– The number of Anglophones who connect their TV to the Internet continues to grow, with now more than four in ten (44%) doing so;

– Going hand in hand with the growth of Internet-connected TVs is the continued growth of Netflix – close to half (47%) of Anglophones now have a Netflix subscription;

– Wearable techologies are starting to reach an audience in the Anglophone market.
