NETFLIX SUBSCRIBERS IN CANADA get the best value for their money compared to other countries, according to new data from tech review site Comparitech.

The site analysed the differences in library size and the cost of monthly Netflix subscriptions in 78 countries and found that Canadians who subscribe to the streamer’s Basic level of service (i.e. standard-definition videos viewed on one screen at a time) come out on top.

(Ed note: This is about to change as Netflix announced prices in Canada will rise substantially as its standard plan will jump $3 a month to $13.99.)

The study found a substantial disparity when analyzing the cost per title between different countries.  According to the research, Canadians have access over 5,500 titles for C$8.99 per month (or $0.00124 average cost per title), about 10% cheaper than what U.S., UK, and Australian customers are paying per title.  With the average cost of a title currently $0.00222, the average customer worldwide pays 57% more per title than Canadian customers.

“…(T)here is a distinct difference between what European countries pay and what non-European countries pay”, adds the report.  “European countries are almost always paying more than the rest of the world… “While the reason for this is unclear without further research, it may be due to higher VAT taxes in these countries.”

Residents of Denmark pay the most for Netflix and have almost half the library size of Canada (3,305 titles, at $0.003200 per title), meaning that Danish customers pay 98% more per title compared to Canadian customers and about 90% more than U.S. and UK customers.

Brazil was ranked as the cheapest country to watch Netflix, though its library (3,944 titles) was more limited.
