
BRUCE and GREY COUNTIES – The governments of Canada and Ontario announced today they are investing $11 million to bring high-speed Internet to over 6,100 homes, farms and businesses in Bruce County and Grey County by the end of the year.
Each government has committed to invest $3 million to support the construction of broadband infrastructure in Bruce County, according to an Ontario government press release.
Four projects will benefit over 4,300 homes, farms and businesses in Sauble Beach, Sauble Beach North, Lion’s Head, Colpoy’s Bay, Wiarton, Vesta, Ellengowan, Pinkerton, Eden Grove, Cargill, Cargill Siding, Dunkeld, Chepstow, Otter Creek, Pearl Lake, Maple Hill and Malcolm.
The contracts for these projects were awarded by Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT).
In its own press release today, SWIFT announced Xplornet Communications has begun construction on three projects in Bruce County. The ISP is to bring fibre-to-the-home connectivity to a total of 3,247 homes and businesses in Sauble Beach (and Sauble Beach North), Lion’s Head, Colpoy’s Bay and Wiarton.
According to the accepted projects page on SWIFT’s website, the total value of Xplornet’s SWIFT projects in Bruce County is $6.4 million, $2.8 million of which is coming from the federal and provincial governments.
SWIFT’s website also indicates EH!tel is the service provider for the final project in Bruce County announced today.
The Ontario and Canadian governments are contributing a total of $3.1 million to the project, which is valued at $4.7 million. The project, which will provide high-speed Internet service to 1,054 premises, is expected to be completed by the end of September 2022.
The governments of Canada and Ontario are also committing $2.5 million each to support construction in Grey County, according to the Ontario government’s press release.
Three projects in the area will benefit over 1,800 homes, farms and businesses in Rockford, Chatsworth, Williamsford, Holland Centre, Dornoch, Cruickshank, Springmount, Leith and Annan.
SWIFT’s website indicates Xplornet is the ISP for all three projects, which have a combined total value of $7.6 million and are all expected to be completed by the end of November 2022.
“These investments are in addition to projects currently underway which will bring high-speed internet to more than 1200 homes, farms and businesses in Grey County and more than 1400 homes, farms and businesses in Bruce County,” the government’s press release says.
